As a wrap up activity for ELECTRICITY, 5th graders got the opportunity to use an amazing little piece of technology called a MakeyMakey. Students were introduced to the MakeyMakey during Career Centers. They were able to extend on their knowledge of how the MakeyMakey works. The MakeyMakey is an Arduino board which connects to the computer through a USB port. When students hook leads to the board and touch the leads, they are connecting electric circuits. Using everyday objects they can create a game controller. Groups created their own controller for different games, and then had the chance to play each others games.

5th graders did an amazing job with their Science Fair projects. We have been having a lot of HAIR RAISING fun in the STEM Lab. 5th grade has been learning all about electricity, magnets and electromagnets. We made hair raise with static electricity activities. Snap circuits helped them learn all about the basics of an electric circuits. Magnets and their relationship to electricity was also discussed. Then we made a simple electromagnet from a nail, wire and battery. 5th Graders have the opportunity to take part in amazing activities in the STEM Lab. They will take part in lots of hands on learning this year. Their Science textbook will come alive in the STEM Lab. Activities so far include: *Introduction and spaghetti towers *Microscopic World *Animal and Plant Cell Lab *Are You Contagious Activity *Fingerprint Science *Science Fair Intro and Quicker Picker Upper Lab *Chemical and Physical Changes Today was a super exciting day in 5th Grade for Ms. Hammond, Mrs. Campbell & Mrs. Beddard, and Mrs. Einertson's classes. (Mrs. Powell's class will be in the STEM Lab Wednesday) Today was BOT BUILDING DAY!!!! The students used the motor from a battery powered toothbrush and a battery to build a bot. We had so much creativity from the kids. This was a brand new STEM activity for 5th grade, and I can't wait to make it even better next year. Ms. Hammond Mrs. Campbell & Mrs. Beddard Mrs. Einertson Mrs. Powell I am so excited to introduce a brand new activity to 5th grade students. Over the past month we have been collecting battery powered toothbrushes. These toothbrushes were torn apart and will become the base of "Bots" the students are designing and building. We have been talking about electricity in Science. The students also learned all about how batteries work (electricity in chemical form) Students are going to use their knowledge of electric circuits to put together a "Bot" that they designed. This is an exciting STEM activity for the kids to take part in. I showed them a couple of basic ideas. We brainstormed additional ideas. Almost all materials they need will be supplied, but some of them have items they want to bring in from home. We will be building the "Bots" on March 6th and 8th. They will bring their creations home to share. Can't wait to see what they build. 5th Grade students are beginning to study electricity. They will learn all about static electricity, electric circuits, electromagnets and many other related topics. Today in the STEM Lab we talked about static electricity. It was a "Hair Raising" class!! Students also had the opportunity to work with the Snap Circuit kits. This is a great way to introduce them to the basics of a circuit. They will be building on this knowledge both in the classroom and STEM Lab. All 5th grade student will need to bring in a battery powered toothbrush from the Dollar Tree. The store across from Sprayberry High School has had a good number of these in stock. All students need to bring in their toothbrush by the end of this week. We will be using them to make robots...stay tuned to see the results.
We are having a Science Fair!!!! 5th grade students at Rocky Mount will be taking part in a Science Fair in March. Today in the STEM Lab we talked about what goes in to a good Science Fair project. In order to practice the parts of the SCIENTIFIC METHOD, which will be a key part of the project, they tested the absorbent qualities of different brands of paper towels. Bounty paper towels advertise that they are the "Quicker Picker Upper" but are they really? Students compared the amount of water absorbed by Bounty, Kroger, Target and Wal-Mart paper towels in 5 minutes. This lab is a great example of the type of project that could be used in a Science Fair. Our results: TARGET brand paper towels were the overall winner!
