5th Grade students are beginning to study electricity. They will learn all about static electricity, electric circuits, electromagnets and many other related topics. Today in the STEM Lab we talked about static electricity. It was a "Hair Raising" class!! Students also had the opportunity to work with the Snap Circuit kits. This is a great way to introduce them to the basics of a circuit. They will be building on this knowledge both in the classroom and STEM Lab.

All 5th grade student will need to bring in a battery powered toothbrush from the Dollar Tree. The store across from Sprayberry High School has had a good number of these in stock. All students need to bring in their toothbrush by the end of this week. We will be using them to make robots...stay tuned to see the results.
We are having a Science Fair!!!! 5th grade students at Rocky Mount will be taking part in a Science Fair in March. Today in the STEM Lab we talked about what goes in to a good Science Fair project. In order to practice the parts of the SCIENTIFIC METHOD, which will be a key part of the project, they tested the absorbent qualities of different brands of paper towels. Bounty paper towels advertise that they are the "Quicker Picker Upper" but are they really? Students compared the amount of water absorbed by Bounty, Kroger, Target and Wal-Mart paper towels in 5 minutes. This lab is a great example of the type of project that could be used in a Science Fair. Our results: TARGET brand paper towels were the overall winner!
