The 2nd graders are learning and growing so much this year. They are ready for bigger challenges. This year they have been taking part in more STEM activities, problem solving, and more in depth science. The second semester of school will be an amazing time to build on everything they have already learned, while adding in exciting new information. 2nd Grade STEM Lab Activities: *Pipecleaner STEM Challenge *Lab Safety lesson and Skittles Experiment *Introduction to Matter *Properties of Matter *Seasons- why do leaves change color *Force and motion stations *Puff Car STEM Activity *Intro to the Sun, Earth and Moon

Today was the day we had all been waiting for....drop SCIENCE books on eggs day. The 2nd graders were in charge of designing and building helmets to help protect the eggs from falling SCIENCE books. We had some splattered eggs and some eggs that did not break. The students had a great time with this STEM activity. I had an awesome helper for the day too! Ashton helped drop books all day as the STEM Lab Assistant. This was part of the Rocky Mount Foundation Auction earlier in the year. Ms. Craig Mrs. Chaney Mrs. Levin Mrs. Evans & Ms. ChildressLast time students were in the STEM Lab, we learned all about the parts of an egg. Today, we talked about the strength of an egg shell. Egg shells are super strong from end to end. So strong....that they will hold up a 2nd grader!!!! No eggs were harmed in this demonstration! Addison, spent the day as my Lab Assistant (thanks to the wonderful Rocky Mount Foundation auction). Students then began planning to build a helmet for their eggs. The helmet is going to protect the eggs from FALLING SCIENCE BOOKS!!! Mrs. Chaney's Class Ms. Craig's Class Mrs. Levin's Class Mrs. Evans/Ms. Childress Class As we end 3rd quarter and begin the 4th quarter of the school year, it is time for 2nd graders to begin learning about life cycles!!! This is a most exciting part of the school year because they get to see tadpoles turn into frogs, caterpillars turn in the butterflies and eggs hatch into little chicks. So today we learned all about the parts of the egg. The parts we can't see through the shell. The parts that we are usually whipping up in the kitchen and not paying close attention to. Next time they are in the STEM Lab we will be starting another EGGcellent STEM activity! Today, 2nd grade students learned all about the Moon. We talked about the phases of the Moon. Used our "Moon Viewers" to get a view of the moon from the Earth. Today was all about understanding that the Moon does not change shape over the lunar month, instead what changes is our view of the moon. Take time to look at the Moon and talk your kids about what they have learned. Mrs. Chaney Ms. Craig Mrs. Levin Mrs. Evans/Ms. Childress 2nd grade is learning all about the Sun, Earth and Moon. Today we talked about the 3 celestial bodies and described how they work together in space. The students created models of the Earth, Moon and Sun so that they can go home and talk about everything they learned today in the STEM Lab. Today was launch day for the Toilet Paper Tube Rockets. The students did a great job. They really enjoyed seeing everyone's rocket launch. We talked about laws of force and motion as they were launching. After the launch we had an opportunity to discuss why some rockets flew better than others, and what changes we could make to this project. Pictures of the "Farthest Flying Rockets" were taken, and the pictures show the excitement that the kids felt from their victory. 2nd Grade students have learned all about force and motion. We are putting their knowledge to the test with a fun STEM Activity. Students are designing and building their own rockets out of toilet paper tubes. The rockets will be sent flying the next time they come to the STEM Lab. Look for pictures and an update of how far the rockets flew. |
