First grade students are learning all about sound. We talked about how sound is caused by vibrations and travels in waves. There were opportunities for the kids to feel vibrations of sound and see the waves of sound in water. The end activity was a fun way to see if they could identify things that they are familiar with by listening to the sounds they make.

First grade is learning all about LIGHT & SOUND in the STEM Lab. We have learned about shadows and properties of light. The students had a great time listening to mystery items hidden in eggs. Can you match the sound with the item? It's much harder than you think. 1st graders have learned so much during the first semester of the school year. This is a year where we build on the skills they learned in Kindergarten. The students are learning to cooperate, communicate and solve problems through the STEM activities they take part in while in the STEM Lab. I look forward to the next part of the school year with them. 1st grade activities in the STEM Lab: *Toilet paper roll towers- intro to the STEM Lab *Weather intro- Make Rain in a Bag to take home *Rain Shelter STEM Activity *Magnet stations *Me and My Shadow- intro to light *Light Part 2- refraction, reflection of light Today, 1st grade students started learning all about parts of a plant in the STEM Lab. We also looked at seeds from different plants and tried to match the seed to the plant. The time in the STEM Lab ended with every student taking home a kit to make their own Grass Head Guys and Gals! The students love to plant the grass seeds and watch them grow. They can see the root system through the cup too! The best part is when the grass gets long enough to trim!! Continue to water and place in a sunny spot and the grass will grow and grow! Today, 1st grade students started learning the basics of computer science. We learned about ALGORITHMS! Students took part in a fun activity called "Find the Flurb". They programmed each other using ALGORITHMS. The goal was to use the directions to find the Flurb. We are going to work more with computer science in the STEM Lab. Today in the STEM Lab we continued our discovery of the properties of light by taking white light (from flashlights) and separating it into the colors of the rainbow (visible light spectrum). This is a fun activity that can be done at home. All you need is a flashlight, CD and a dark room. Shine the light on the shiny side of the CD, moving the CD into the light until a rainbow appears. The students also made kaleidoscopes.
The most fun part of their time in the STEM Lab was when they were able to make a rainbow appear on their friend's face. First Grade began the new year in the STEM Lab by learning more about light. We talked about three important words: TRANSPARENT, TRANSLUCENT AND OPAQUE. Students also explored how opaque objects will block light and create a shadow. They also created their own shadow puppet to take home.
